Description
Brushless motor 2.2 kw drive upgrade parts Warco type WM 280 SC4
Brushed motors have many drawbacks.
- Maintenance and cost of replacement brushes
- Wear on the commutator causing degraded performance from ovaling and depression which is difficult to dress.
- Black carbon dust deposits
- At high speed and high torque brushes arc.
- No magnet brake
- poor torque overall
- poor speed control under loading conditions
- consumes more power
- noisy
- heat,,, when in demanding heavy use
- When changing to reverse and starting the motor too quickly the main circuit breaker will trip, this remains the same on the BLDC motor, however worth mentioning this drawback.
I have carried out in depth extensive R and D, I can now offer optional upgrades to enable a 220 VAC 2.2 kw BLDC industrial sewing machine motor (available separately) to be installed.
Parts will be added as I can introduce them. Please feel free to message me for more information.
The Backing adapter plate. The replacement motor (available separately) has a different foot print size and adaption method than the legacy brushed motor.,
Contents
- Adapter plate with M8 studs fitted
- 4 x M6 x 20 mm countersunk screws hex drive
- M8 studs are 89 mm apart
Dual Drive Pulley Increased size and balanced .
The existing fitted dual drive pulley has a 15 mm bore size. a 20 mm with a 5 mm keyway is required. Unless you can purchase a 15 mm spindle sized motor.
In addition
- The pulley is too small a diameter
- The diameters have been balanced so that changing the pulley speed doesn’t require the V belt tension to be readjusted.

Contents :
- Enlarged and balanced pulley for the improved operation and v belt adjustment. Manufactured in Cast iron.
- 4 M6 Machine screws
Note, Manufacturing a Drive pulley requires a specialist tools: Collet chuck, 20 mm internal collet, 5 mm key way slot broach cutter, 20 mm broach mandrel and pressing equipment.
Spacer and Stepped nut
The pulley requires a spacer rather than the original Allen grub screw fastener.
InProgress: Remote Speed and Fwd/reverse push button cable form.. This will enable the motor and control unit to be mounted at the back of the lathe and the essential operation controls to be fitted to the front.
The speed pot has been replaced and enhanced for improved control of the speed, acceleration and de-acceleration.
Contents
Cable form, including pot and fwd rev push switch
Gland
Installation and Connection instructions
Control unit spacer mounting kit
Contents
- 4 x M4 x 16 mm screws
- 4 x M4 x 5 mm machine screws
- 4 through hole spacers x 20mm height,
- instructions for mounting the unit on the back panel.

In progress – Speed knob improvement
A knob which has a small and large diameter enables a manual two speed function, one for speed the other for accuracy.
Programming Guide. I have a programming guide for the Controller/motor this is not readily available.
Conclusion, The complete package of upgrades for this sized lathe are optional as most machinists may want to have a go at something.
When completed its a significant enhancement.
Low speed is accurate and smooth under heavy loading
- The increase and decrease in speed response is very quick, due to the built in braking.
- Less noisy.
- less heat
- Higher top speeds
- reverse is also easy, no change over switches to clunk through just push the switch and the motor slows and reverses.
- You must however ensure the speed pot is at a low speed or zeroed before starting or changing direction, due to the Impulse current. I am currently working on an upgrade for this drawback as accidental over current could cause damage to the electronics.
